The Story About My Stubborn IUD; or, The Uterus That Didn't Want To Give Up Its Toy

Way back in February of 2020, I had an IUD inserted.  A Mirena, not that it really matters, but details are fun.

(It hurt, just fyi.  It hurt a lot.  My goodness.  "Just take a Tylenol and an Advil half an hour before your appointment and that should be fine!"  Yeah, no.)

In October of 2023 I had my tubes removed (bilateral salpingectomy).  I could have had the IUD removed during the surgery, but my periods were really bad in high school and I wasn't ready to revisit that 'period' of my life just then.

Last year, I started learning about menopause and perimenopause and I realized that I have no idea what my body is doing, or should be doing.  I don't have a consistent cycle.  I wouldn't know if there were any changes happening.  So I started tracking it (in October of 2025, because details, right?).

Indeed, nothing has been consistent.  So I figured that since it's been almost seven years, why not get the IUD removed early and see what the old body really does?  Of course, after coming to this conclusion, I didn't manage to book an appointment for removal for over a month, because ADHD and all.  But I did finally book it, for last Friday (July 10, 2026 - I may as well be consistent, since my body isn't).

The week leading up to the removal date was weird.  There was bleeding, but not normal bleeding.  My anxiety about the removal pain doubled with the weird bleeding.  Friday finally arrived, and we went to the doctor's office and checked in.  And my appointment wasn't there.

Look, I had already booked the day off from work.  I know I made the appointment.  I think someone didn't book it properly.  They called it a glitch in the system.  I know customer service lies when I hear one.

All good.  They were able to book me in for later that morning.  So I lived in my anxiety ball for another two hours, then came back to the office.

The doctor asked why I wanted it removed, so I explained, and then she asked about when the last pap smear was, and I cringed, so now I was getting one of those, too, while she was in there.  Fine.  The speculum was gonna make an appearance anyway.

That medieval torture device was inserted and the sample taken for the testing, and then she started pulling strings.  The IUD strings.  I could feel her tugging on them.  She looked up and said, "It's stuck."

"Oh?" I said.

"It won't come out."  She got up and told me that the next step was an ultrasound.  (Also, after I got dressed, she made me pee in a cup to rule that out, too.)

Well.  I booked the ultrasound (had to take time off work for that, too) for today (July 14, 2026.  Details, details, details).  That didn't take long at all.  I'd never had the transvaginal ultrasound before.  That was weird.

So the clinic I went to has an app that holds the results of the testing.  They took 42 ultrasound pictures.  42!  And they checked waaay more than the location of my stubborn IUD.

Retroverted uterus.  IUD arm possibly embedded in myometrium.  And (drum roll, please) one much larger ovary, enlarged because of a cyst.

Look, I might have been cursing that IUD, but if it had just come out when tugged, that probably wouldn't have been found.  I don't know what the next steps will be, but I'll record 'em.  For details.

End of month yarn stats:  53 entries, 87 skeins, 24493.30 metres, 9843 grams.

We're further into June than I wanted to be - a little late on this update!  So, it looks like my reverse psychology attempt with regards to the spinning wheel didn't work, and I did end up buying some yarn in May.  I was also given yarn in May that was purchased in Whitehorse.  (I'm not even going to mention June's acquisition.)

I did finish a project, but I also had a wrist injury in early May that affected any real progress.  It's better now, and I did do several fidget toys (who am I? crochet?!), but starting new projects was more exciting.

June is already being difficult - it's hot (though not overly humid) and it's usually harder to knit in the summer (for me, with no central air).  So this month's goals will be easy.

June goals:

1.  Don't buy any more yarn.
2.  Don't accept any more yarn (than what I've already accepted :D).
3.  Don't finish any projects.
4.  Bring knitting to look at on the camping trip at the end of the month.

June.  How fun, how fleeting!  It's already over.  I started two new projects (one required frogging an older WIP).  The Gingerbread blanket was stalled for a week while I untangled my mess.  It was fine, but I got cocky and stopped carefully watching how the yarn was pulling off the already-in-use ball.

I started the baby blanket.  It's literally 10 rows in.  I'm not sure what happened there.  Will I continue it?  Will I frog it?  Who knows!

I did hint at accepting yarn, and I had already accepted it when I wrote last month's update, but it's hard to add to stash as it wasn't labelled.  So that means that the yarn stats are not true.  I'm still working on identifying most of it.  (It's not a lot, I promise!  Not like the amount of yarn I purchased on Canada Day . . . .)

We went camping and it was glorious.  I had so many mosquito bites.  But I saw fireflies for the first time in 25 years and that was . . . words escape me.

In July, I'll be knitting the yearly MKAL - Warrior Goddess!

July goals:

1.  Enter all yarn into stash (for a reality check).
2.  Finish two projects (namely, the Gingerbread blanket and the Not So Colourful blanket).
3.  Don't buy any more yarn.  Please.  We're running out of space.
4.  Work on the MKAL!  That's right, it's that time of year again!

Pictures from Rondeau Provincial Park

We went camping this past weekend and there were birds.  I love birds.  There were other weird 'birds' in trees, too.  Here are some of my favourites!

Next trip will be to Arrowhead at the beginning of September!

End of month yarn stats:  52 entries, 86 skeins, 24203.20 metres, 9653 grams.

April:  Over, as it should be.  At least, close enough that I'll call it over.  It wasn't horrible, but between slight work drama causing unnecessary waves and all the anniversaries, I'm happy it's done.

Successfully didn't buy yarn again!  And I finished two projects.  I could have finished the fingerless mitts, but I started another project instead.  I didn't check the 'wheel', but I thought about it more, so that counts, yeah?

May goals:

1.  Finish fingerless mitts.
2.  Look at the 'wheel' all month, but don't you dare use it!
3.  Try not to buy yarn.

March isn't technically over yet, but I highly doubt I'll be adding to stash or starting/finishing any projects in the next 3-1/2 hours, so we're good.

I added a project to the list that was started in January - somehow I'd forgotten about its existence until now!  It's a super bulk (jumbo?) yarn that I was given and I have it all next to my desk where I should be able to work periodically on it - yeah, that's working out about as well as it sounds.

I think the slump is starting to lose its grip, but it's slow going.  I want to finish a couple of projects in April and start spinning fibre again.

April goals:

1.  Finish the 1898 hat.  (Stretch goal:  finish the Musselburgh.)
2.  Make sure the spinning wheel works still.
3.  Don't buy any yarn.  It's not like I'm using it, anyway!
4.  Don't overthink tomorrow or the 14th, but be there for my brother.

Oh, boy.  Sorry.  It's almost a week into March and I'm just getting to this now.  I hit all my goals!  And I did buy yarn, but it was so pretty.

February went by a lot faster than last year's February.  I'll take it.  Still playing everything carefully.

March goals:

1.  Knock a couple of projects out.
2.  Don't buy yarn (for real this time).
3.  Survive March.

Well, I'm still in that knitting slump.  I suspect some of it is due to the season (winter, cold, dark, yuck).  I talked about an increase in the Vyvanse with my doctor, but since this is the first winter on the meds, it's hard to tell if the slump (not just in knitting, if we're gonna be honest) is due to the season or not.  If things start gearing back up in my brain by mid-March, then I guess that'll be enough data to use next December/January if it happens again.  I do love data.  Though I don't always know what to do with it!

It's February 7.  I'm a little late updating this blog.  I'm practising what I've learned in therapy and using radical acceptance a lot.  If I don't want to knit right now, then I don't have to.  If I don't want to read, I don't have to.  If I don't want to do laundry, okay, that's where maybe I have to do some, but not worry about getting it all done.

February goals:

1.  Don't actively go out to buy yarn, but if it really makes me happy and I can envision a project with it, then get it.
2.  No finishing projects.  Not one.  Not even that scarf that's really close to being finished.  If it looks like it's almost time to bind off, put it away until March.  (I'm joking.  Reverse psychology?)
3.  This is the shortest month.  Eat Mini-Wheats for breakfast six days a week.  (I do that anyway.)
4.  Wear a sweater at least once.  (Ha, like I'd go out without one in this temperature!  It's -20C without the windchill today.)

End of month yarn stats:  47 entries, 84 skeins, 23492.70 metres, 9662 grams.

December is finished.  2025 is finished.  What a weird year.

I've been in a bit of a knitting slump this month.  I started a new project (the hat), but then started another that was better suited for car knitting on the way to my work's Christmas party.  I have since finished that, but it's not been blocked, pictured, and none of the ends are woven in, so I don't consider it officially finished.  Kind of like the MKAL project that's still missing final pictures.  Ahem.

I didn't buy yarn this month, but I did inherit some, so that's why there's an increase.  I think I will continue to focus on using up stash, as I don't really have a lot of room for tons of yarn.  I think this year I will try to schedule out some projects from my queue and do more spinning as well.

I haven't stressed about the medication as noted last month, and I suspect some of that had to do with a month-long battle with coughing from post-nasal drip.  (Our building uses hot water for heating, and it makes everything very dry.  We've been working on getting the humidity up and I think we might have hit a good point with all that.)

The beginning of a new year always feels fresh and full of potential, and I'm not really sure why there's that mentality.  It's just a continuation of the previous day/week/month, and it seems to be quite a human thing to think about.  People have their end-of-year/new-year traditions and superstitions, but when it really gets down to it, it's meaningless.  (I'm starting to sound like the teacher from Ecclesiastes.)

I guess this is a round-about way to state that I'm not making new goals because of the new year, but because I'm still finding what works for me now that I have better control over my brain.  I have been utilizing things I've learned to better manage things in other areas, and now it's time to look at the crafting area of my life.  If I chunk away at things this way, it doesn't feel so overwhelming.

Anyway!  January goals:

1.  No yarn.  Seriously, I don't really need any, and I have a bunch of stuff I oughta finish first.
2.  Finish two projects (the kerchief, since it's almost done, and the scarf started in March).

I forgot about the pictures.  I forgot to set a reminder.  I didn't realize November was over.

I didn't buy yarn, and I did finish a project.  It's been a difficult month - there was a loss (finale this Saturday), there was snow (ugh!), and there were many deadlines and changes at work.

December isn't going to be much better, I don't think.  There's always so much going on.  Ah, well, here are its goals:

1.  Briefly contemplate the MKAL project and its lack of final project pictures.
2.  Buy no yarn.
3.  Drink tea daily.
4.  Finish a project.

(I wonder if an increase in medication is warranted.  Not willing to try to get a doctor's appointment, though.  Not yet.  Not unless it starts feeling difficult.)

December is finished.  2025 is finished.  What a weird year.

I did think about the MKAL pictures and thought to myself, "You should get those pictures, eh?" but I was driving at the time and the thought was filed safely away in that back room in my mind long before I was home.  Ah, well, maybe this month.  (Yeah, right.)

Okay, October wasn't bad.  Still successfully cold-sheeping, and I even finished a project from the summer!  The hat that my mom asked for.  The hat that I told her I'd finished and was ready for her.  That she said, "Oh, for me?  Why?"  And now I know why my memory's crap.

The flood clean-up at work drags on, but we continue to chip away at it and we've got our customer service area back up and (mostly) running.  We adapt.  We are flexible.  We will get through this.

November goals:

1.  Create a reminder to take pictures of the MKAL project.
2.  Maybe take those pictures?
3.  No yarn buying!
4.  Finish the crochet project (or get to a point where the yarn is used up and now Walter has to decide if it's big enough).

End of month yarn stats:  46 entries, 75 skeins, 22255.50 metres, 7925 grams.

I did nothing!  Absolutely nothing!  At least, from my goals (except the cold sheeping - I did that, unwillingly).

I haven't touched the projects from the Montreal trip, I haven't updated the MKAL project page with final pictures, and I certainly didn't share any pictures from the trip.  I totally started two new projects (one specifically for a concert and one for Walter).  I've been working at the Mini Mania scarf and that's gotten some of the fingering-weight yarn ends out of the stash.

We had a flood at work (water main break) and that's been quite the headache, since regular operations still have to proceed even during clean-up.  We also had a trade show to attend (that was this last Monday to Thursday), so prep for that had to continue as well.  It's been chaotic and fun - even the flood clean-up.  It's really shown how well our work team comes together and gets stuff done.

October goals:

1.  Update the MKAL project page with final pictures.  At the very least, take the final pictures.
2.  Cold sheep!!!  We got this!
3.  Finish something, anything, even if it's not a knitting or crochet project.
4.  Make The Morpher.

Too fast, August, too fast.  We arrived home last night after a day of travelling by train.  I miss Montreal, but most of my regret is due to the rain that prevented me from walking around and taking pictures of the architecture.  I'll gather some of the pictures I did take and do another post for the trip.

I didn't buy yarn!  That might have been due partially to the rain, but also due to timing.  I didn't want to drag the others over to a store to look around and be bored.  Maybe next time.

The MKAL is over and I still have to take glamour shots of the finished product, but it was lovely!  I enjoyed every clue.

September goals:

1.  Finish the gloves that were started on the trip.
2.  Continue to cold-sheep.
3.  Update the MKAL project with final pictures.

Ah, July.  What were you, three days long?

Seriously, though, that was a quick month.  I guess I kept busy.

I hit all of my goals this month (if we can ignore the lack of finished pictures for Wrapid, that is).  I've been keeping up with the clues (we're on clue six as of today!) and I haven't even thought about the languishing WIPs!  And I didn't buy yarn.

I've been working on Walter's poncho all month (when not doing MKAL clues) and it's almost done - less than twenty looooooong rounds to go.  I think I'll have to start the next mobile knitting project this weekend, as the poncho is definitely beyond that!

August goals:

1.  Finish the poncho and the MKAL.
2.  Start a packing list for the Montreal trip at the end of the month.
3.  Don't buy yarn unless it's in Montreal.
4.  Survive August.

End of month yarn stats:  53 entries, 84 skeins, 24823.80 metres, 8795 grams.

I survived June!  It helped that June felt like it was four days long.

I bought yarn several times this month.  I'm doing a mystery knit-along and I bought three (shoulda been two) skeins of sock yarn that I found out afterward wouldn't work with the design.  It should have been two skeins, since I had one in my stash already, but I'd pulled out that colourway as well to compare with the other two and forgot to put it back on the shelf.  And now I'm not even using them!

I also bought yarn for a poncho that my son really wants (he likes coming up with stuff for me to knit for him).  Then, I found three skeins of Noro Silk Garden at Value Village for $4 each, and then I bought another ball of the Glimmer I'm using from Walter's stash for a scarf.

I focused on the Wrapid cardigan for most of June, and it's almost finished.

July goals:

1.  Finish Wrapid.
2.  Try not to buy yarn?  Maybe?
3.  Keep up with the clues each week for the MKAL.
4.  Avoid any work on any of the languishing WIPs currently laying around the apartment.  (This one should be easy.)

May felt more productive, and I suspect that some of it is due to the medication I've started.  I finished the test knit before the due date and it's beautiful!

I did buy yarn, but it was a special one.  I was at Mary Maxim on Victoria Day (I know, what do I expect going to a yarn store?) and I saw a discontinued colourway in Lion Brand Mandala - Hudson's Bay!  I figured this was an acceptable exception to my cold sheeping.

The blanket is done! It's currently drying out from its bath and I'll do a final steam block on it, then off to its recipient!

June goals:

1.  Work on the Cable Car Coat a few nights this month.
2.  No more yarn!
3.  Start something new (I've got something in mind).
4.  Survive June.

An Eventful Saturday

On Saturday, we visited the Steam Museum for an iron pour event.  Here are some pictures!

They even have a mini train people can ride on.  Afterwards, I got some close-ups of friends.
